Dans un contexte dominé par les élites salvadoriennes, encore extrêmement fascinées par la culture européenne, des intellectuels comme Jorge Amado ont réussi à se faire connaître et à être visibles, ouvrant ainsi l’espace aux travaux d’autres intellectuels tout aussi importants dans les années 1930, comme Aydano do Couto Ferraz et Edison Carneiro. Même si Jorge Amado vivait à Rio de Janeiro en 1931 pour terminer ses études secondaires et entrer dans l’enseignement supérieur, il continuait à se rendre constamment à Bahia pour collecter du matériel pour ses romans et pour rendre visite à ses amis et à sa famille. C’est pourquoi, dans ce livre, nous analyserons l’implication des sujets de recherche dans les questions relatives à l’idée de classe, de race et de problèmes ethnico-religieux. Nous n’aurions jamais imaginé trouver de telles discussions dans les articles publiés dans les journaux, les livres et les actes du IIe congrès afro-brésilien, qui s’est tenu en janvier 1937 dans la ville de Salvador. Le congrès était un espace utilisé par les communistes pour débattre des questions de race et de classe, et servait également de pont pour la fondation d’autres espaces de sociabilité tels que l’Union des sectes afro-brésiliennes.
