Fin dall’antichità, l’uomo ha continuamente utilizzato il legno come materiale per la costruzione di utensili e strutture, e per ottenere sottoprodotti generati nella produzione che sono stati e sono importanti per lo sviluppo della società (lattice, cartiere, medicinali).L’uso intensivo delle risorse forestali ha avuto e continua ad avere effetti dannosi sull’ambiente; si è verificata una drastica riduzione delle aree verdi in tutto il mondo a causa dello sfruttamento di foreste e boschi senza l’applicazione di programmi di riforestazione; ci sono anche aree impossibili da recuperare e specie di fauna e flora che sono sull’orlo dell’estinzione o già estinte. La maggior parte dello sfruttamento forestale avviene per scopi industriali, alcuni per scopi ornamentali, anche se stanno diventando sempre più importanti, e pochissimi si basano sul mantenimento dell’ambiente naturale.
