Les impacts sur l’environnement se sont produits sous différentes formes et intensités sur les différents milieux : le sol, l’eau et l’air. Le sol, en tant que composante importante des écosystèmes, avec des caractéristiques particulières d’interaction avec la faune et la flore, a fait l’objet d’études et de protection. Actuellement, plusieurs pays utilisent des critères juridiques pour la protection des sols, soit par le biais de valeurs indicatives génériques, soit par une évaluation des risques au cas par cas. Au Brésil, l’État de São Paulo a été le premier à publier des valeurs indicatives pour les sols et les eaux souterraines en 2001 (CETESB, 2001) et les a mises à jour en 2005 (CETESB, 2005).
