Le sorgenti termali sono un meraviglioso patrimonio della natura. In Sri Lanka sono state riconosciute quasi dieci sorgenti termali. Sebbene la gente creda che il bagno nell’acqua calda naturale possa causare effetti dannosi come irritazioni, danni alla pelle e, raramente, anche all’apparato orale a causa delle tossine algali nocive (microcistina). Mahapelessa è una delle famose sorgenti termali dello Sri Lanka meridionale ed è stata sviluppata come luogo per l’ecoturismo. Pertanto, questo studio è stato condotto come base di riferimento per la qualità dell’acqua e gli aspetti biologici ed è stato riportato come il primo studio sulla biologia delle sorgenti calde in Sri Lanka. Il manoscritto illustra le condizioni fisico-chimiche e biologiche della sorgente di Mahapelessa durante il periodo da agosto a novembre del 2013. Sono state identificate diverse specie di fitoplancton (Spirogyra sp., Gloecapsa sp., Scenedesmus sp.) e di zooplancton (Keratella sp., Moina sp.) che possono essere considerate come specie indicatrici della temperatura dell’acqua superiore a 40 ˚C. I risultati della ricerca saranno utili ai biologi e ai futuri ricercatori interessati alla qualità delle acque termali per introdurre migliori pratiche di gestione dell’uso della natura per lo sviluppo economico.
