Lo sviluppo delle Neuroscienze ha portato contributi molto significativi allo studio della mente umana e delle sue funzioni di base: memoria, inconscio, sogno, rimozione, empatia, condivisione di stati affettivi ed emozionali, imitazione, intenzionalità.
