A responsabilidade pelo melhor aproveitamento da madeira no Brasil e no mundo tem exigido uma abordagem muito específica, a fim de proporcionar condições propícias ao seu processamento e à sua utilização industrial de forma sustentável. No Brasil, o Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis (IBAMA) é o órgão regulador desta atividade para a conservação racional, incluindo no que diz respeito à questão do registo de produtos de madeira de preservação. O Sistema Estrutural em Madeira em Forma de Árvore - ARROW, objeto de uma investigação de tese de doutoramento na Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo (FAUUSP), é o ponto de partida deste trabalho e o fio condutor deste livro, que está a ser desenvolvido, neste momento, no Laboratório de Madeira e Estruturas em Madeira - LaMEM/SET/EESC/USP. A partir do ARROW, foram desenvolvidos vários estudos de caso em madeira redonda perfilada, com os mais variados programas funcionais, entre os quais se destacam: habitações unifamiliares e multifamiliares, centros de investigação, centros educativos, unidades culturais, abrigo (paragem) de autocarro, bebedouro para gado, entre outros.
