La valutazione dell’impronta idrica offre una nuova prospettiva, in cui il fabbisogno idrico totale viene quantificato e localizzato geograficamente (Aldaya et al., 2011). Il concetto di impronta idrica è stato introdotto come analogia all’impronta ecologica, indicando l’uso dell’acqua piuttosto che quello del suolo. L’impronta idrica è un indicatore dell’uso dell’acqua che mostra l’uso diretto e indiretto dell’acqua. È definita come il volume totale di acqua dolce utilizzata per produrre un determinato bene o prodotto. L’impronta idrica è un indicatore geograficamente esplicito che non mostra solo i volumi di utilizzo dell’acqua e l’inquinamento, ma anche le località.
