Este livro é uma obra de referência que estuda as elevadas concentrações de gases dissolvidos no Lago Kivu, não ficando indiferente à catástrofe ocorrida no Lago Nyos em 1986. Tratou-se de uma erupção límnica num lago meromítico com as mesmas caraterísticas do lago Kivu. No entanto, para realizar o nosso estudo, utilizámos uma metodologia comparativa e ferramentas apropriadas. Os objectivos eram saber se uma erupção lícnica é possível no Lago Kivu; identificar as possíveis consequências de uma erupção lícnica no Lago Kivu; elaborar um plano de gestão e de prevenção dos riscos e das catástrofes de uma erupção lícnica no Lago Kivu; e comparar os factores endógenos, exógenos e heterogéneos entre o Lago Kivu e o Lago Nyos no que diz respeito a uma erupção lícnica.
