Il sistema visivo umano svolge funzioni importanti quando il cristallino mette a fuoco la luce sulla retina. Questa percezione della luce è possibile grazie al sistema fisiologico e strutturale dell’occhio. Qualsiasi deformità nello sviluppo o nella struttura del cristallino porta alla perdita della vista. La cataratta congenita è un’opacizzazione del cristallino dell’occhio con cui un bambino nasce o che si sviluppa subito dopo la nascita. Può verificarsi per motivi legati allo sviluppo o a causa di infezioni, traumi o alcune sindromi metaboliche che possono verificarsi nell’utero. Si ritiene che tra l’8,3 e il 25% dei casi di CC sia ereditario. La CC ha una frequenza approssimativa di 1-15/10.000 nati vivi e rappresenta l’8-39% di tutti i casi. Di questi, circa un terzo dei casi di CC è di tipo familiare. È stato dimostrato che la cataratta ereditaria rappresenta tra l’8,3% e il 25% dei casi di CC. La cataratta congenita è presente dalla nascita. Tra ottobre 2013 e aprile 2014 è stato condotto uno studio retrospettivo e analitico su tutti i casi di cataratta congenita di Lahore osservati durante il lavoro presso l’ospedale Layton Rahamatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT). Lo scopo di questa ricerca era valutare la prevalenza di cecità e nistagmo nei pazienti affetti da CC nelle zone di Lahore.
