A alarmante crise alimentar mundial exige medidas imediatas e necessárias para o desenvolvimento de sistemas sustentáveis para aumentar a produção e a segurança alimentar num país sobrepovoado como o Bangladesh. Existem enormes pousios e terrenos baldios ao longo dos lados e das encostas da rede de estradas, auto-estradas, caminhos-de-ferro, canais de irrigação, aterros, limites de quintas e herdades, etc., em terras planas e também nas zonas ribeirinhas e montanhosas do Bangladesh. Com o objetivo de desenvolver estas terras em pousio de forma planeada e de as cultivar de forma integrada, juntamente com a conservação dos solos, o desenvolvimento paisagístico e os benefícios ambientais, foi examinada a prática de produção agroflorestal de terras em pousio à base de nim e feijão-caupi no campus da Universidade Agrícola do Bangladesh, em Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
