Questa è la questione centrale affrontata in questa magnifica opera. In generale, gli slogan attuali rivelano che gli africani aspirano all’affermazione, o addirittura allo sviluppo politico, economico, sociale... Ciò è legittimo. Tuttavia, secondo le analisi dell’autore, fondate essenzialmente su dati empirici e statistici, la traduzione di questo concetto nella realtà sarebbe condizionata da importanti riforme mentali, strutturali, politiche, economiche e sociali. Altrimenti si rischia di rimanere ancora a lungo in un progetto onirico. In questa ottica, egli afferma che il diritto allo sviluppo non deve rimanere un’illusione per questo continente così ricco, che vanta una tradizione ancestrale di solidarietà, di lavoro organizzato e ben svolto, fermento di ogni successo sociale. Una tradizione oggi snaturata dai tormenti di una modernità fredda e cieca, che dà ampio spazio all’immoralità, all’individualismo e all’egoismo, talvolta in spregio alla povertà o alla miseria dei popoli.
