Nato intorno al 1908 a Bafilo, Essoh Irateï Zakari era figlio di Bangna Kpara Tchakoura, noto come Essoh-Tewé, e di Bidaï Ali Gbana del clan Wadi. Persi entrambi i genitori in tenera età, fu allevato dallo zio paterno, Bangna Ali Abantè, Capo Paramount di Bafilo dal 1918 al 1963. Bangna Ali Abantè morì nel 1963, dopo 45 anni di regno, e la reggenza fu affidata al nipote Essoh Irateï Zakari. Durante questa reggenza si distinse per il suo dinamismo e la sua schiettezza. Mantenne la carica di reggente fino al 1966, quando il capo Nassam Saïbou Toma fu nominato al trono supremo. Questo nuovo capo fu richiamato a Dio il 7 febbraio 1973 dopo un regno di sette anni. Al termine del periodo di reggenza, Essoh Irateï Zakari fu eletto Capo Paramount di Bafilo il 1° maggio 1975, a seguito di un’elezione presieduta dal Capo di Stato, Gnassingbé Eyadéma. Ha regnato per 24 anni, dal 1975 al 1999, con il nome di Ouro-Koura Essoh Irateï Zakari. Morì la sera del 5 giugno 1999 all’età di 91 anni.
