Né vers 1908 à Bafilo, Essoh Irateï Zakari est le fils de Bangna Kpara Tchakoura dit Essoh-Tewé et de Bidaï Ali Gbana du clan wadi. Il perdit très tôt ses deux parents et fut élevé par son oncle paternel, Bangna Ali Abantè, Chef supérieur de Bafilo de 1918 à 1963. Ce dernier décéda en 1963, après 45 ans de règne et la régence fut confiée à son neveu Essoh Irateï Zakari. C’est au cours de cette régence qu’il s’est fait remarquer par son dynamisme, son franc parlé. Il a occupé cette fonction de Régent jusqu’en 1966, date de la désignation du Chef Nassam Saïbou Toma au trône suprême. Ce nouveau Chef fut rappelé à Dieu le 7 février 1973 après sept ans de règne. A la fin de la période de régence, Essoh Irateï Zakari est élu Chef supérieur de Bafilo le 1er mai 1975 à la suite d’une élection présidée par le Chef de l’Etat Gnassingbé Eyadéma. Il régna 24 ans à la tête de cette chefferie supérieure, de 1975 à 1999 sous le nom de Ouro-Koura Essoh Irateï Zakari. Il s’éteignit au soir du 5 juin 1999, à l’âge de 91 ans.
