Nascido por volta de 1908 em Bafilo, Essoh Irateï Zakari era filho de Bangna Kpara Tchakoura, conhecido por Essoh-Tewé, e de Bidaï Ali Gbana, do clã Wadi. Perdeu os pais muito cedo e foi educado pelo seu tio paterno, Bangna Ali Abantè, chefe supremo de Bafilo de 1918 a 1963. Bangna Ali Abantè morreu em 1963, após um reinado de 45 anos, e a regência foi confiada ao seu sobrinho Essoh Irateï Zakari. Foi durante esta regência que se destacou pelo seu dinamismo e franqueza. Exerceu o cargo de regente até 1966, altura em que o chefe Nassam Saïbou Toma foi nomeado para o trono supremo. Este novo Chefe foi chamado de volta a Deus a 7 de fevereiro de 1973, após um reinado de sete anos. No final do período de regência, Essoh Irateï Zakari foi eleito Chefe Supremo de Bafilo a 1 de maio de 1975, na sequência de uma eleição presidida pelo Chefe de Estado, Gnassingbé Eyadéma. Reinou durante 24 anos, de 1975 a 1999, sob o nome de Ouro-Koura Essoh Irateï Zakari. Morreu na noite de 5 de junho de 1999, com 91 anos de idade.
