Il colombo è un legume importante dal punto di vista economico e nutrizionale ed è una delle principali fonti di proteine per le comunità povere di molte regioni tropicali e subtropicali del mondo. I funghi che infettano i semi (Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium udum, Drechslera sp., Curvularia lunata, Rhizoctonia sp., Aspergillus niger e Aspergillus flavus) sono importanti vincoli per i semi di colombo. Recentemente, gli addetti allo stoccaggio delle sementi hanno dovuto affrontare i principali problemi di infezione fungina, che hanno causato gravi perdite nella qualità e nella quantità dei semi. Il trattamento delle sementi con prodotti biologici e chimici ha dato buoni risultati nella crescita delle piantine, prevenendo i danni alle piantine e mantenendo proteine, lipidi, zuccheri, nutrienti e vitamine. Il trattamento delle sementi è quindi molto utile per la conservazione dei semi per lunghi periodi.
