Despite these challenges, Zeph is determined to make something of himself and sets out to find work. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including a kind-hearted woman named Mrs. Jupp, who takes him in and helps him get back on his feet. Zeph also falls in love with a woman named Mary, but their relationship is complicated by his poverty and her social status.
