Die Laubwälder sind die auf Kuba am weitesten verbreitete Waldformation in flachen und hügeligen Gebieten; sie verfügen über die besten Böden und wertvolles Holz, weshalb sie praktisch ausgerottet wurden und es nur noch sehr wenige Orte mit dieser Waldart gibt.In Hornos de Cal, Sancti Spíritus, gibt es ein sehr interessantes bewaldetes Gebiet auf nacktem Karst oder Lenar, das bisher noch nicht unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Vegetation untersucht wurde.Die physiognomischen Studien der natürlichen Vegetation sind sehr wichtig, da sie es ermöglichen, die untersuchten Vegetationsformationen zu charakterisieren.Durch diese Untersuchungen konnte festgestellt werden, dass sich dieser Wald von anderen Laubwäldern unterscheidet, da er mehr sukkulente, korienhaltige und verholzte Blätter aufweist als typische Laubwälder.Er weist auch einen höheren Prozentsatz an Stacheln und ein größeres Vorkommen an morphoökologischen Anpassungen auf, die auf den hohen Wasserstress zurückzuführen sind, den der kahle Karst auf die ihn bedeckende Vegetation ausübt.
