Il Mozambico ha, nella sua documentazione storica, casi di mobilitazione e strumentalizzazione dell’etnia che sono sfociati nella violenza etno-politica. Questa realtà sanguinosa era predominante durante la lotta per l’indipendenza dal regime coloniale portoghese ed era chiaramente percepita come una minaccia alla liberazione nazionale. Di conseguenza, il movimento nazionalista guidato dal FRELIMO, che poi è diventato il governo al potere, nell’era post-indipendenza, ha attuato politiche in ambito politico e culturale per 'smobilitare l’etnicità', al fine di prevenire la continuazione dello spargimento di sangue etnopolitico. Questo è diventato un imperativo, prima per raggiungere l’indipendenza e poi per preservare la sopravvivenza dello Stato, che subito dopo l’indipendenza era minacciato da una guerra prolungata. Le misure politiche e culturali contribuirono in modo significativo alla scomparsa della violenza etno-politica, ma finora questo fatto è stato trascurato a livello accademico. Pertanto, a differenza degli studi che spiegano i motivi della violenza etno-politica, questa è la prima ricerca qualitativa che si concentra sulle ragioni dell’assenza di violenza etno-politica in Mozambico.
