Les tornades sont de plus en plus fréquentes en Oklahoma. La planification de la préparation aux situations d’urgence est essentielle pour réduire les risques de blessures ou de décès liés à une tornade. Les recherches sur les connaissances et les perceptions des immigrés hispaniques en matière de préparation aux situations d’urgence sont limitées. L’objectif de cette étude était d’explorer les perceptions et les expériences vécues par les immigrés hispaniques qui ont vécu une tornade en Oklahoma au printemps 2013. Des entretiens semi-structurés ont été menés auprès d’un échantillon de 10 personnes immigrées vivant à Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, et dans ses environs. Les résultats ont indiqué que les participants immigrés avaient vécu plusieurs tornades, qu’ils cherchaient régulièrement un abri pendant une tornade et que 50 % d’entre eux avaient créé un plan d’urgence familial et un kit d’approvisionnement en raison de leur expérience des tornades et du risque perçu de blessures. Les obstacles identifiés à la planification de la préparation sont les barrières linguistiques et le manque d’informations sur la préparation aux catastrophes naturelles. Les résultats permettent aux praticiens de la santé publique d’améliorer l’accès et la diffusion d’informations sur la planification de la préparation, ce qui peut favoriser un changement social positif en réduisant le risque de blessures et de décès chez les immigrants.
