Estarão os alunos do ensino secundário preparados para a matemática universitária? Este estudo de caso qualitativo examinou a forma como quinze antigos alunos do ensino secundário de uma pequena escola secundária rural no centro de Vermont percepcionaram a sua preparação para a matemática de nível universitário e identificaram recomendações para melhorar. As entrevistas aos alunos e os dados da avaliação matemática de cada participante foram analisados para responder à questão de investigação. O protocolo de entrevista consistiu em entrevistas telefónicas individuais semi-estruturadas que foram gravadas para transcrição. Foram elaboradas treze perguntas abertas para responder à pergunta de investigação e às sub-perguntas baseadas na literatura de investigação e nas preocupações específicas identificadas pelos professores de matemática definidos no estudo de caso. O quadro concetual para este estudo de investigação incluiu seis áreas que influenciaram o sucesso dos alunos na preparação para a matemática universitária: melhorar a comunicação e alinhar as normas entre o ensino secundário e o superior; expectativas, confiança e crença nas capacidades; programas de transição; avaliar a preparação; intervenções e recomendações para a programação do ensino secundário; e perceção e voz dos alunos.
