O quiabeiro é suscetível a nemátodos parasitas de plantas, especialmente Meloidogyne spp. Os nemátodos associados ao quiabeiro foram avaliados no Gana entre agosto e dezembro de 2014. Duzentos e quarenta produtores de quiabo foram entrevistados para determinar o seu conhecimento sobre a ameaça de infeção por nemátodos no quiabeiro. Cento e dois (85%) e 66 (55%) dos agricultores não sabiam que os nemátodos infetam o quiabeiro nas agroecologias de Floresta Semidecídua Húmida e de Transição de Savana Florestal, respetivamente. Setenta e dois e 52% das fazendas de quiabo avaliadas apresentaram sintomas de infeção por Meloidogyne nas agroecologias Floresta Semidecídua Úmida e Savana de Transição Florestal, respetivamente. Cinqüenta e quatro fazendas de quiabo foram pesquisadas para nematóides parasitas de plantas. Foram encontrados seis géneros de nemátodes - Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, Xiphinema, Helicotylenchus, Rotylenchulus e Scutellonema . Todos os géneros pertencem à Ordem Tylenchida, exceto Xiphinema, da Ordem Dorylaimida. Meloidogyne foi o mais abundante (64,90% de abundância relativa) e teve uma frequência de 100%. Xiphinema, o menos abundante (0,05%), ocorreu apenas no distrito de Ejura Sekyedumase.
