Die Mitglieder der Poaceae sind von Natur aus mit Züchtungspotenzialen ausgestattet, die in mehreren Sorten/Kultivaren von Weizen, Reis und anderen Getreidearten benötigt werden. Polyploidie ist bei Pflanzen extrem weit verbreitet, und die meisten Gräser sind polyploider Herkunft. Getreide dieser Gruppe bildet die wichtigsten Getreide- und Futterpflanzen der Welt und deckt den größten Teil der Ernährung von Menschen und Tieren. Gräser sind das beliebteste und schmackhafteste Futter in Schwaden, Grasland und Weiden für Weidetiere. Gräser bieten Grasflächen als Stütze und aus ästhetischen Gründen üppig grüne Rasenflächen in Gärten und Parks.
