Environmental problems brought on by the activities of oil corporations have been a challenge facing the artisanal fishing folks in the region since the area is the country’s primary oil-producing zone. The area also has a diversity of ecosystems that support a great number of aquatic and terrestrial animals and plants. Oil spills, which threaten the region’s main source of income-fish production in coastal waters-increase unemployment, poverty levels and an enhanced well-being.
