Este projeto de pesquisa buscou conhecer as opiniões dos instrutores de EFL do ensino superior nos Emirados Árabes Unidos sobre a importância da literatura no ensino de idiomas e o uso de literatura culturalmente familiar nas salas de aula de EFL. Além disso, teve como objetivo descobrir se a leitura de literatura culturalmente familiar tem um impacto positivo na compreensão de leitura dos alunos de EFL em comparação com a leitura de literatura culturalmente menos familiar. Foi utilizado um questionário para conhecer as opiniões dos professores e foi concebido um estudo exploratório envolvendo 76 alunos de EFL para testar se a familiaridade cultural tinha algum efeito na compreensão de leitura. Foram utilizadas medidas quantitativas e qualitativas para discutir os resultados do estudo. A análise dos dados da pesquisa revelou que os instrutores reconheceram a importância da utilização da literatura no ensino da língua-alvo e eram a favor da utilização de literatura culturalmente familiar nas salas de aula de EFL. Os resultados dos testes de compreensão também confirmaram que a familiaridade cultural tem um impacto positivo na compreensão de leitura dos alunos de EFL.
