A religião tem sido frequentemente condenada por ter sido uma fonte de guerra e de conflito e não um veículo de paz. Durante mais de 1500 anos, as religiões, através das suas várias instituições, influenciaram o Estado e a sua política. Atualmente, a maioria dos países modernos afirma que a religião deixou de ter espaço na esfera pública. Além disso, consideram muito difícil voltar a uma época em que as instituições religiosas tratavam o Estado como seu instrumento. Mas, apesar destas afirmações, Samuel Huntington vê a religião como uma das principais causas das guerras contemporâneas. Este trabalho explora o papel desempenhado pelas religiões nos conflitos dos Balcãs e do Cáucaso e procura avaliar a validade da teoria do 'Choque de Civilizações' de Huntington nestas guerras.
