Sie halten es auch für sehr schwierig, in eine Zeit zurückzukehren, in der die religiösen Institutionen den Staat als ihr Instrument betrachteten. Trotz dieser Behauptungen sieht Samuel Huntington die Religion als Hauptursache für die Kriege der Gegenwart. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Rolle der Religionen in den Konflikten auf dem Balkan und im Kaukasus und versucht, die Gültigkeit von Huntingtons „Kampf der Kulturen'-Theorie in diesen Kriegen zu beurteilen.
