Numerische Behandlung von Differentialgleichungen ist seit vielen Jahren mit einiger RegelmaBigkeit Thema einer Tagung am Mathematischen For­ schungsinstitut in Oberwolfach gewesen. Wie bei den frilheren Tagungen wurde auch diesmal ilber in neuerer Zeit erzielte Fortschritte bei sehr ver­ schiedenartigen numerischen Methoden berichtet. Neben dem allgemeinen Uberblick fand bei dieser Tagung das Gebiet der freien Randwertaufgaben besondere Berilcksichtigung. Solche Probleme bei partiellen Differentialglei­ chungen galten noch vor etwa 5 Jahren als ein auBerordentlich schwieriges, numerisch kaum angreifbares Gebiet, auf dem erst jetzt ein entscheidender Fortschritt erzielt worden ist; es gelang, derartige Aufgaben mit Hilfe der Methode der Variationsungleichungen theoretisch und auch numerisch brauchbar zu erfassen. Zugleich zeigte sich, daB solche Aufgaben in sehr vielen verschiedenen Anwendungsgebieten auftreten. Es sei nur an freie Oberflachen von Flilssigkeiten und Gasen, Grenzflachen zwischen elastischem und plastischem Verhalten, Grenzflachen von Sickerstromungen, Grenzfla­ chen zwischen Medien verschiedener Konzentration bei chemischen Vorgan­ gen usw. erinnert. Einige dieser Erscheinungen wurden auch auf dieser Tagung behandelt. Unser besonderer Dank gilt dem Direktor des Forschungsinstitutes, Herrn Prof. Dr. Barner, und der ausgezeichneten Betreuung durch die Mitarbeiter und Angestellten des Institutes.
