Um solo saudável é uma fonte rica de bactérias. As bactérias são criaturas fascinantes e abundantes que vivem em quase todos os habitats da Terra. Embora algumas sejam prejudiciais e outras pareçam não influenciar as nossas vidas, muitas bactérias são muito úteis. A investigação sugere que muitos destes micróbios podem produzir substâncias químicas que podem ser utilizadas como antibióticos. É extremamente difícil cultivar estes organismos em equipamento de laboratório, no entanto, os cientistas estão a tentar cultivá-los em condições de campo. Precisamos desesperadamente de novas formas de combater as infecções bacterianas nos seres humanos. Tradicionalmente, os antibióticos têm como alvo principal a replicação do ADN bacteriano, a síntese de proteínas ou a síntese de peptidoglicanos. A resistência generalizada levou os investigadores a procurar novos alvos para combater as infecções bacterianas. Com uma enorme diversidade e riqueza microbiana, não é surpreendente que o solo albergue uma grande diversidade de genes de resistência antimicrobiana (ARGs). Estudos recentes recuperaram não só material genético ortólogo a ARGs conhecidos encontrados em bactérias patogénicas contemporâneas, mas também novos mecanismos de resistência que têm potencial para fornecer antibióticos eficazes.
