Durante las últimas décadas, la apicultura mundial ha venido experimentando un preocupante despoblamiento de las abejas de las colmenas. Sin embargo, durante este mismo periodo de tiempo ha sido detectada una nueva especie de microsporidio Nosema cerenae parasitando a la abeja melífera Europea, por lo que se le ha atribuido a este agente patógeno un papel importante en el desarrollo de este nuevo fenómeno. Los microsporidios, son altamente especializados y muy simplificados tanto morfológica como estructural y metabólicamente, poseen un reducido genoma y un sofisticado mecanismo de infección, el filamento polar, un interesante carácter apomórfico, todo lo cual los hace fascinantes de estudiar. Esta revisión sintetiza los progresos en el conocimiento de N. ceranae con énfasis particular en la morfología, epidemiología y patología comparativa de esta especie implicada en el síndrome conocido como nosemiasis tipo C.
