Водохранилище Йонки расположено в районе Кайнанту в Папуа-Новой Гвинее. В настоящее время виды рыб в водохранилище находятся под угрозой из-за антропогенной деятельности, такой как продолжающаяся мелкомасштабная добыча россыпного золота и практика утилизации сточных вод в водосборных районах. Рыба, загрязненная тяжелыми металлами, представляет угрозу для водных организмов и людей, которые зависят от рыбы в качестве пищи. Целью данного исследования была оценка уровня содержания хрома (Cr), мышьяка (As), кадмия (Cd), свинца (Pb), ртути (Hg), меди (Cu), цинка (Zn) и никеля (Ni) в поверхностных водах и донных отложениях в районе водохранилища Йонки и верхних течениях в течение влажного и сухого сезонов. Тяжелые металлы также оценивались в тканях отдельных видов рыб из водохранилища Йонки. Результаты показали, что физико-химические параметры и содержание тяжелых металлов в поверхностных водах находились в пределах норм ВОЗ (2011), необходимых для выживания водных организмов. Содержание Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni и Pb превышало нормативы качества осадков в сухой сезон по сравнению с влажным сезоном. Значения индекса геоаккумуляции показали, что Pb в донных отложениях сильно загрязнен, особенно в сухой сезон. Наконец, рекомендовано разработать план управления отходами.
