I nanogel sono nanosistemi non ionici e ionici costituiti da polimeri reticolati fisicamente o chimicamente, idrofili, idrofobici o anfifilici. I materiali che formano i nanogel possono essere costituiti anche da polisaccaridi e proteine, selezionati in base alla loro risposta biodegradabile e meno immunogena. Questi materiali sono particolarmente efficaci nell’aumentare il carico di farmaco nella regione mirata e nel controllare la propensione di tutti gli altri nanocarrier a perdere il bioattivo caricato. I GN con un diametro compreso tra 1 e 1000 nm integrano le proprietà degli idrogel e dei nanomateriali. Un nuovo trasportatore di farmaci deve avere due caratteristiche principali: deve trasportare il farmaco alla velocità desiderata e deve consegnare con successo il farmaco al sito bersaglio. Di conseguenza, i nanogel possiedono diverse proprietà sofisticate che possono contribuire allo sviluppo di nuovi sistemi di somministrazione. La Farmacopea degli Stati Uniti definisce un nanogel come 'un sistema semisolido costituito da una dispersione di piccole particelle inorganiche o di grandi particelle organiche contenute e compenetrate da un liquido'.
