The book 'Muqadma Sher o Shaeri' is considered to be the first book of Urdu criticism and Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali is considered the first authentic critic of Urdu for this reason. In this book, Hali tried to popularize the principles of Western criticism in the East. In addition, he also discussed different genres of literature. This book has two parts. In the first part, the definition of poetry, its effectiveness and utility, and the importance of words and meanings are explained. Along with this, the basic principles of Urdu poetry are formulated and the necessary conditions for it are presented. In the second part, the definition and characteristics of the main genres of Urdu poetry are given along with the correct criteria for them./مقدمہ شعر و شاعری، اردو تنقید کی ابتدائی کتاب مانی جاتی ہے اور مولانا الطاف حسین حالی کو اسی وجہ سے اردو کا پہلا باقاعدہ نقاد تصور کیا جاتا ہے۔ اس کتاب میں حالی نے مغربی تنقید کے اصولوں کو مشرق میں رواج دینے کی کوشش کی۔ اس کے علاوہ مختلف اصنافِ سخن پر بھی بحث کی۔ مقدمہ شعر و شاعری کے دو حصے ہیں۔ پہلے حصے میں شعر کی تعریف، اس کی تاثیر و افادیت اور الفاظ و معانی کی اہمیت کی تشریح کی گئی ہے۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ اردو شاعری کے بنیادی اصول مرتب کرکے اس کے لیے ضروری شرائط پیش کی گئی ہیں۔ دوسرے حصے میں اردو کے اہم اصناف سخن کی تعریف و خصوصیات کے ساتھ ساتھ ان کے لیے صحیح معیار بتا ئے گئے ہیں۔
