Il presente lavoro aveva l’obiettivo di monitorare la qualità dell’acqua nel bacino idrografico del fiume Cabelo, al fine di contribuire alla definizione di misure di monitoraggio della qualità dell’acqua e di gestione ambientale di tale bacino. Il bacino idrografico del fiume Cabelo è interamente compreso nel comune di João Pessoa, PB, tra le coordinate 7o08’53' e 7o11’02' di latitudine sud e 34º47’26' e 34º50’33' di longitudine ovest e un’altitudine media di 31,15 m. La ricerca ha previsto un’indagine tramite questionari sull’uso dell’acqua, la georeferenziazione delle fonti di inquinamento puntuali e diffuse tramite l’uso del GPS e la valutazione della qualità dell’acqua . Le principali fonti di inquinamento osservate nel bacino idrografico del fiume Cabelo sono state: scarichi domestici e industriali, rifiuti solidi, sfruttamento della sabbia, espansione urbana senza infrastrutture , sfruttamento agricolo, deforestazione, interramento della mangrovia, occupazione irregolare della spiaggia, urbanizzazione caratterizzata da un’occupazione in cui predominano i condomini, diversi lottizzazioni e residenze costruite irregolarmente.
