La palma da olio (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) o dendezeiro, come è conosciuta in Brasile, è una palma di origine africana tipica delle regioni tropicali; in Brasile, le maggiori aree coltivate si trovano nella regione amazzonica. La palma da olio è una coltura molto suscettibile alle infestazioni di parassiti e malattie. Tra i parassiti che infestano questo seme oleoso ci sono roditori e insetti, e tra le malattie, l’anello rosso (AV), la fusariosi o la cocciniglia letale (SL), l’ingiallimento fatale. Nella coltivazione della palma, i problemi fitosanitari legati agli attacchi di insetti parassiti hanno un notevole impatto economico, con conseguenti perdite significative di produttività. Tra gli insetti parassiti presenti nella coltura, spiccano Rhynchophorus palmarum L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) e Metamasius hemipterus L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Questi coleotteri creano gallerie nel meristema apicale delle palme, causando una riduzione dell’accestimento e l’apertura dei fori può fungere da passaggio per i fitopatogeni.
