Beginning microscopes are often used as toys, but a good quality student microscope has many applications in science and technology. This books covers the parts of a light (optical) microscope with multiple objective lenses, and coarse and fine tuning knobs, with instructions for illumination, focusing and maintenance.  It presents techniques for preparing several types of slides, with and without stain, and an introduction to freshwater microscopic life.  The student even examines personal mouth bacteria.  In short, it opens up to the student the microscopic world all around.
