O termo 'microemulsão' foi introduzido pela primeira vez por Hoar e Schulman (1943) para descrever uma solução límpida obtida quando emulsões O/W normais grosseiras foram tituladas com álcoois de cadeia média. Daniel son e Lind man (1981) definem a microemulsão como um sistema de água, óleo e anfifilo que é uma solução líquida opticamente isotrópica e termodinamicamente estável. A microemulsão refere-se a uma dispersão isotrópica termodinamicamente estável de dois líquidos imiscíveis, como o óleo e a água, estabilizada por uma película interfacial de moléculas de surfactante. Uma microemulsão é constituída por uma fase oleosa e uma fase aquosa, em combinação com um tensioativo. A fase dispersa compreende tipicamente pequenas partículas ou gotículas, com uma gama de tamanhos de 5 nm-200 nm, e tem uma tensão interfacial óleo/água muito baixa. Como o tamanho das gotículas é inferior a 25% do comprimento de onda da luz visível, as microemulsões são transparentes. A microemulsão forma-se rapidamente e, por vezes, espontaneamente, em geral sem um esforço energético elevado. Em muitos casos, para além do tensioativo, da fase oleosa e da fase aquosa, é utilizado um co-surfactante ou um co-solvente.
