Il termine 'microemulsione' è stato introdotto per la prima volta da Hoar e Schulman (1943) per descrivere una soluzione limpida ottenuta quando normali emulsioni O/W grossolane venivano titolate con alcoli a media catena. Daniel son e Lind man (1981) definiscono la microemulsione come un sistema di acqua, olio e anfifili che costituisce una soluzione liquida otticamente isotropa e termodinamicamente stabile. Per microemulsione si intende una dispersione isotropa termodinamicamente stabile e limpida di due liquidi immiscibili, come olio e acqua, stabilizzata da un film interfacciale di molecole di tensioattivi. Una microemulsione è costituita da una fase oleosa e da una fase acquosa, in combinazione con un tensioattivo. La fase dispersa comprende tipicamente piccole particelle o goccioline, con dimensioni comprese tra 5 e 200 nm, e ha una tensione interfacciale olio/acqua molto bassa. Poiché la dimensione delle gocce è inferiore al 25% della lunghezza d’onda della luce visibile, le microemulsioni sono trasparenti. La microemulsione si forma prontamente e talvolta spontaneamente, in genere senza un apporto energetico elevato. In molti casi, oltre al tensioattivo, alla fase oleosa e alla fase acquosa, viene utilizzato un co-tensioattivo o un co-solvente.
