O filoplano do chá é um dos nichos importantes para diversas interações planta-micróbio que poderão ser exploradas no futuro para melhorar a absorção de nutrientes, o crescimento das plantas e a tolerância a stresses bióticos e abióticos. No presente estudo, procedeu-se à estimativa qualitativa e quantitativa de fungos e à estimativa quantitativa de bactérias e actinomicetos no filoplano de diferentes cultivares de TV cultivadas naturalmente em Assam, no nordeste da Índia, utilizando uma abordagem baseada em culturas. O estudo revelou a existência de mais bactérias do que fungos e actinomicetos, independentemente dos clones de chá. Aspergillus, Penicillium e Mucor foram a micoflora dominante isolada. Entre as bactérias, Pseudomonas e Bacillus foram as dominantes. No que diz respeito à conservação microbiana e à utilização de recursos, a presente investigação oferece um âmbito potencial para o estudo da diversidade microbiana do filoplano associada a esta cultura economicamente importante. O conhecimento da bioecologia e das estratégias de desenvolvimento, a tecnologia de produção microbiana em massa seguida de experimentação no terreno são essenciais para a aplicação adequada desta tecnologia de base microbiana no chá.
