La mesure de la pression arterielle permet une appreciation globale de l’hemodynamique cardio-vasculaire. Elle constitue aussi l’element de base pour Ie depistage et Ie traitement de l’hypertension arterielle. La varia­ billte spontanee de la pression arterielle justifie la repetition de sa mesure dans differentes conditions : consultation, auto-mesure, mesure ambu­ latoire, it l’effort, etc. Cette diversification a entraine Ie developpement d’un grand nombre d’appareils alliant la souplesse de l’electronique it la grande capacite des microprocesseurs. Leur meilleure adaptation aux conditions de mesure a fac~lite une plus grande diffusion. De ce fait, une revision et une redefinition des normes actuelles de l’hypertension arterielle sont souhaitees en fonction de ces nouvelles mesures. Ainsi, l’omnipraticien se trouve de plus en plus confronte it la fois it ses pro­ pres mesures et it celles effectuees dans ces nouvelles conditions. Devant cette multitude de chiffres et pour eviter toute erreur d’interpretation, il parait indispensable, pour tous, de mieux connaitre la signification de chacune de ces methodes et leur eventuel interet en pratique c1ini­ que.
