La consociazione del mais con le colture foraggere è una tecnologia che promuove la verticalizzazione della produttività, contribuendo al mantenimento della qualità del suolo, dell’acqua e dell’aria in un contesto di sostenibilità agronomica, economica e socio-ambientale. Tra le tecnologie in grado di aumentare la produttività c’è il Crop-Livestock Integration System (CLIS), associato all’agricoltura no-till, i cui principali vantaggi sono che il suolo non viene disturbato, è coperto tutto l’anno, riducendo così il rischio di erosione, le condizioni fisiche e biologiche del suolo sono migliorate e c’è la possibilità di una maggiore produttività senza la necessità di aprire nuove aree per scopi agricoli. Affinché il SILP abbia successo, è essenziale che le attrezzature meccanizzate utilizzate per installare e mantenere le colture nel sistema siano utilizzate correttamente. Un uso improprio di queste può causare danni alla struttura del terreno e di conseguenza alle piante che vi crescono, riducendo la produttività e contribuendo al degrado ambientale.
