This is intended to be a simple and accessible book on machine learning methods and their application in computational genomics and nanopore transduction detection. This book has arisen from eight years of teaching one-semester courses on various machine-learning, cheminformatics, and bioinformatics topics. The book begins with a description of ad hoc signal acquisition methods and how to orient on signal processing problems with the standard tools from information theory and signal analysis. A general stochastic sequential analysis (SSA) signal processing architecture is then described that implements Hidden Markov Model (HMM) methods. Methods are then shown for classification and clustering using generalized Support Vector Machines, for use with the SSA Protocol, or independent of that approach. Optimization metaheuristics are used for tuning over algorithmic parameters throughout. Hardware implementations and short code examples of the various methods are also described.

While the great scientists of the past recognized a need for a multidisciplinary approach, today’s schools often treat math and science as subjects separate from the rest. This not only creates a disinterest among students, but also a potential learning gap once students reach college and then graduate into the workforce. Cases on Research-Based Teaching Methods in Science Educ...
  • Enhancing Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research with Technology
    Shalin Hai-Jew
In light of the expensive nature of quantitative research, such as experiments, researchers must seek other methods of understanding the world around them. As such, new qualitative methods are gaining ground in the modern research community. Enhancing Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research with Technology explores the integration of new digital tools into the research process. ...

University of Texas at Austin My friendship with Freeman Dyson goes back over a half century. My first contact with him goes back to the late 1950s, when I was at the Institute for Advanced Study, and then evolved when I was a consultant at General Atomics in La Jolla, California. Freeman was then trying to design a space ship — the Orion — which would be propelled by atomic bo...

The time is right, following Benoît Mandelbrot's death in 2010, to publish this landmark book about the life and work of this maverick math genius. This compact book celebrates the life and achievements of Benoît Mandelbrot with the ideas of fractals presented in a way that can be understood by the interested lay-person. Mathematics is largely avoided. Instead, Mandelbrot&#...

  • Quantum Mechanics and Path Integrals
    Stephen Winters-Hilt
This is a book on Quantum Mechanics. It starts with a description of the pre-Quantum physics developments that led to Quantum Theory. A thorough description of the modern Schrodinger and Heisenberg theories and applications is then given. After the standard, undergraduate-level, quantum mechanics description, a more mathematically formal construction is made with Dirac’s axioma...
  • Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Black Hole Entropy
    Stephen Winters-Hilt
Thermodynamics is the oldest of the physics disciplines with unapologetic use of phenomenological arguments and mysterious thermodynamic potentials (entropy). Obviously, thermodynamics is still prevalent today, including in its more quantified form via statistical mechanics. This book (sixth in a seven-part physics series) is on the fundamentals of modern thermodynamics, statis...
  • Quantum Field Theory
    Stephen Winters-Hilt
This is a book on quantum field theory. The quantum mechanics solution for the simple harmonic oscillator is reviewed at the outset. In the context of quantum field theory this will be referred to as the first quantization solution because we are going to re-use this solution in a new way (an infinite number of times) to arrive at 'second quantization' that will describe a quan...
  • Klasik Mekanik ve Kaos
    Stephen Winters-Hilt
