Leopoldo Alas Ureña (Zamora, 1852 - Oviedo, 1901), conocido por el seudónimo de Clarín, cuenta con una extensa producción literaria, que lo ha convertido en uno de los representantes más destacados de la literatura realista española del siglo xix. Aunque ha cultivado diversos géneros y ha sido una novela, La Regenta, la que lo ha consagrado como figura clave del realismo español, siempre ha defendido en sus artículos la importancia de un género considerado menor en su época (y aún hoy en día): el relato breve y el cuento. En esta obra se recoge una cuidadosa selección de cuentos en los que podemos descubrir diversos elementos que nos van definiendo el carácter del mundo literario de Clarín, la variedad de temas y la riqueza de recursos estilísticos que despliega en la totalidad de sus relatos: Doña Berta, Benedictino, Manín de Pepa José, Zurita, Cambio de luz, La conversión de chiripa.
