Este trabalho explora a virtualização da liderança em contextos organizacionais e defende que os líderes virtuais podem desempenhar funções de liderança transformacional. Utilizando o constructo de líder virtual, argumenta-se que os líderes virtuais são mais do que meros porta-vozes organizacionais e que desempenham, de facto, funções de liderança - funções que são transferidas dos líderes corporativos para os líderes virtuais acima mencionados. É discutida a forma como a liderança virtualizada aumenta a eficácia dos líderes na gestão da mudança organizacional através da utilização de atributos transformacionais, que são activados quanto mais estes líderes são virtualizados. Propõe-se um exemplo da indústria da cadeia de fast-food para analisar criticamente as ideias apresentadas. Mais precisamente, é elucidado como, na McDonald’s, a liderança transformacional virtualizada melhor se adequou à estratégia de recuperação da empresa, implementada para recuperar de um período de crise.
