La région amazonienne présente de nombreuses caractéristiques favorables au développement de la pisciculture, notamment la grande disponibilité en eau, la culture de la population en matière de consommation de poisson, le climat favorable et le nombre d’espèces de poissons indigènes pouvant être élevées. Cependant, le coût élevé des aliments pour animaux freine la croissance de la pisciculture dans cette région. Cela s’explique par le fait que les ingrédients utilisés dans la fabrication des aliments pour poissons sont importés d’autres régions, ce qui augmente le coût de l’alimentation. Une alternative pour résoudre ce problème consiste à utiliser des ingrédients régionaux pour la fabrication des aliments. Cet ouvrage présente la viabilité de l’utilisation du leucena dans l’alimentation du tambaqui. Des études comme celle-ci contribuent au développement d’une pisciculture économiquement viable, respectueuse de l’environnement et socialement équitable en Amazonie.
