Augustine Le Brun, élève-institutrice âgée de 19 ans, est affectée en 1883 à l’École Normale d’Institutrices d’Alençon ; elle est par la suite élève à l’École Normale Supérieure de Fontenay-aux-Roses - formant les maîtres des maîtres - puis professeur à l’École Normale de Versailles. De 1883 à 1887, Augustine adresse à sa famille 170 lettres relatant son quotidien : préparation des cours et des examens, rapports avec ses enseignants et ses élèves, activités menées dans les différentes écoles normales... Les lettres d’Augustine s’inscrivent dans les derniers remous de la transformation totale de l’enseignement en France, encadrée par les lois Jules Ferry votées de 1879 à 1886 : cette correspondance est une source d’informations pour toute personne s’intéressant à l’histoire de l’éducation, aux écoles normales et à ce que pouvait être la vie d’une enseignante à la fin du XIXe siècle.
