De nos jours, les pays romans d’Europe sont la France, l’Italie, l’Espagne, le Portugal, la Belgique, la Roumanie-Moldavie et divers petits États comme le Luxembourg, Monaco, Saint-Marin, Andorre et la Cité du Vatican. Les langues d’origine latine couvrent diverses régions d’autres pays, telles que les cantons suisses francophones, italophones et romanchophones, ainsi que des communautés d’autres pays européens non latins. La population totale de toutes les zones d’Europe où l’on parle directement une langue romane s’élève à environ 210 000 000 d’habitants, ce qui représente 42 % de la population de l’Union européenne. Lorsque l’on constate que tous les pays germaniques d’Europe sont fortement influencés par le latin dans leur vocabulaire scientifique, et lorsqu’il apparaît également que l’ensemble de la structure juridique continentale repose sur les coutumes, les lois et les traditions romaines, on comprend aisément qu’il vaut la peine de s’intéresser à la première romanisation qui s’est opérée en Europe sous la pointe du gladius des légionnaires, ainsi qu’à la seconde romanisation qui est allée de pair avec l’expansion de l’Église catholique et l’élévation des rois francs au rang de nouveaux empereurs du Saint-Empire romain germanique.
