Heutzutage gehören zu den romanischen Ländern Europas Frankreich, Italien, Spanien, Portugal, Belgien, Rumänien-Moldawien sowie verschiedene Kleinstaaten wie Luxemburg, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra und die Vatikanstadt. Sprachen auf lateinischer Basis decken verschiedene Regionen anderer Länder ab, wie beispielsweise die französisch-, italienisch- und romanischsprachigen Kantone der Schweiz sowie Gemeinschaften in anderen nicht-lateinischen europäischen Ländern. Die Gesamtbevölkerung aller direkt romanischsprachigen Gebiete in Europa beträgt etwa 210.000.000, was 42 % der Bevölkerung der Europäischen Union ausmacht. Wenn man bedenkt, dass alle germanischen Länder Europas in ihrem wissenschaftlichen Vokabular stark vom Lateinischen beeinflusst sind, und wenn zudem deutlich wird, dass die gesamte kontinentale Rechtsstruktur auf römischen Bräuchen, Gesetzen und Traditionen basiert, können wir durchaus nachvollziehen, dass es sich lohnt, einen Blick auf die erste Romanisierung zu werfen, die in Europa an der Spitze der Gladius-Klingen der Legionäre stattfand, sowie auf die zweite Romanisierung, die Hand in Hand mit der Ausbreitung der katholischen Kirche und der Erhebung der fränkischen Könige zu den neuen Kaisern des Heiligen Römischen Reiches von Europa ging.
