L’école, peut-elle encore devenir ce lieu d’émancipation de l’Homme par le savoir ? Cette question traverse l’actualité éducative contemporaine. En effet, certains pensent qu’à force de vider l’école de ses finalités premières, on ne lui assigne plus que des objectifs purement fonctionnels, comme l’acquisition de portefeuille de compétences pour s’assurer de l’insertion de chacun sur le marché du travail. D’autres, au contraire, continuent de penser que malgré les injonctions de l’économie du marché et des politiques, l’école peut encore rester ce lieu unique, qui, à la fois prépare chacun à apprendre à sentir et comprendre ce que vaut d’être homme et à quoi cela engage (Jaurès, 2005, p.100), tout en acquérant les compétences qui lui permettent de s’insérer aussi bien humainement, citoyennement, socialement que professionnellement dans un monde qui le précède et l’excède. Ce sont ces conditions de possibilité pour redonner à l’école cette double fonction, en partant des contextes différents, que cet ouvrage explore.
