La NREGA ha quindi coperto l’intero Paese, ad eccezione dei distretti con una popolazione urbana al 100%. Questo programma è stato formulato fondendo programmi precedentemente elaborati, come il Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) del 2001 e il National Food for Work Programme (NFFWP) del 2004. Il 2 ottobre 2009 il governo indiano ha rinominato il suo programma di punta per la garanzia dell’occupazione rurale, il National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Il governo centrale sta aumentando la spesa pubblica nell’ambito del MGNREGA. Nel recente bilancio (2013-14), sono stati stanziati 38.309,7 crore di rupie per il MGNREGA, con un aumento del 3,23% rispetto al bilancio 2011-12 (1237 crore). In India 35.49.03.669, nel Maharashtra 1.03.36.684, nella regione di Marathwada 14.61.376 e a Parbhani 13.7.223 famiglie possono ottenere un impiego dal MGNREGA fino all’anno finanziario 2013-14. In India 21.870.136 lakh di rupie, nel Maharashtra 58.4952 lakh di rupie, nella regione di Marathwada 14.1376 lakh di rupie e a Parbhani 8.492 lakh di rupie. Spese per manodopera e materiali investiti nel MGNREGA fino all’anno finanziario 2013-14.
