Ce texte est le résultat d’un projet de recherche de master réalisé à l’Université de São Paulo entre 2007 et 2010, sous la direction du professeur Roberto Bolzani Filho. Dans ce texte, nous avons l’intention d’analyser l’argument développé par Platon dans son œuvre la plus célèbre, La République, qui établit le philosophe comme le souverain politique dans la cité et l’individu authentiquement juste. Pour ce faire, nous essayons d’analyser le discours présenté dans les livres centraux de l’œuvre (livres IV, V, VI et VII) dans lesquels Platon développe une conception de la nature de la philosophie comme imitation des Formes et justifie la supériorité du philosophe sur la base de sa compréhension exclusive du Bien. Nous entendons réfuter l’évaluation largement répandue de l’argumentation de Platon qui l’accuse de construire deux conceptions inconciliables du philosophe : le philosophe pratique et le philosophe contemplatif. Nous passerons donc en revue quelques-unes des principales thèses éthiques, politiques, épistémologiques et ontologiques de l’œuvre pour montrer que la philosophie dans La République est comprise comme la prise d’une position existentielle complexe qui façonne tous les aspects de la vie d’un individu.
